Sliding your bag under your chair while you sit down on the chair may seem reasonably secure, perhaps allowing you the opportunity to enjoy watching the hustle and bustle of other tired tourists, or watching the departure board. But this also allows any would-be thief the opportunity to slide your bag backwards under your seat and calmly walk off with it unnoticed.

Perhaps you have wisely thought ahead and considered such a possibility, and lifted your chair, sliding the handle of your bag under the leg, to prevent someone from sliding your bag away. However, in truth, this does very little to stop all but the most casual of thieves who will simply use scissors or a knife to cut the strap that is hooked under you chair leg, and then remove the bag jut as easily.

There are manufacturers who produce bags with slash proof handles. Although not entirely cut proof, because the handles have woven into them a metal mesh, they do prove far more durable and much harder to cut through without it being extremely obvious what you are doing. A bag that has these handles could be looped under chair leg and be considered reasonably secure.

Of course, would be thieves have a number of other tricks up their slips, especially focusing on sagging zips. Clearly a zip is very easy to undo, relatively unnoticed, and if the bag is over your shoulder in a crowd, it is easy to slide the zip open and remove the contents. Perhaps, again, you have thought ahead to this eventuality and bought a small padlock which will loop through the zip hasp and lock it at the closed end. There are ways, however, of undoing any zip from the opposite end to the hasp.

Where the zip joins the material there will be a weak spot, and poking a ball point pen or other sharp object between the teeth of the zip will pop it open, and allow the whole zip to pop open its full length, allowing easy extraction of the items with no regard to the lock.

Again, manufacturers have addressed this problem, and today it is possible to purchase bags which have zips built in such a way as to prevent this method of forcing open a zip. It is true that these bags are more expensive, but the peace of mind they bring would be considered worth every penny should you have been unfortunate enough to have experienced a theft yourself.

The issue of tipping can cause a lot of problems, usually as a direct result of a lack of understanding or clear communication. This is not helped by the fact that policies and expectations on tipping vary widely depending on which cruise line company you are travelling with and even, in some cases, which ship you are going on.

Often it used to be the case that passengers would tip each waiter, waitress or steward a small amount each time they did some kind of service, but then found out later that 15% had been added to the bill anyway for gratuities. In this way, the passengers ended up paying twice, and it can certainly add up to a considerable sum of money, especially since many cruises are ten to fourteen days.

Some companies make it clear that no tips are expected, but that instead there is a 15% gratuity charge on each bought service. Of course, this does mean that if your steward provides you with an excellent service you are quite free to tip him or her at the end of the cruise. As a usually guide, tipping is considered to be in the region of 1.50 pounds per person per day. There are some cruise line companies that don’t include gratuities but also don’t expect tips. Instead, they add a 5 pounds charge per person per day to the cruise, and this is then divided between the restaurant staff, the stewards and waiters. Again, you are more than free to add your own tip, but this reduces the expectation and helps clear up the matter so that people know where they are.

Having said all that, it is still the case that you are likely to expect a slightly higher level of service, and a slightly more prompt one, if you are known as someone who tips. Word will spread, and it is important for you to bear in mind whether the additional cost is worth it for a very slightly sharpened service.

An alternative way of managing this which a few companies have started doing is to have a single pot of tips that are automatically included in the overall cost, but that passengers have the chance to vote for their favourite steward or waiter. In this way, you can still reward those staff you feel have provided an exceptional service, but not directly from your pocket. Those staff who receive the most votes win a proportion, or greater proportion of the overall funds available for tipping.

As you can see, the schemes and rules are very varied, and it is not easy to tell in advance what the advice will be. If in doubt, it is always best to contact the cruise line and ask. Often, you’ll find that you will be given literature which will offer you specific advice regarding this, usually to be found in a section of ‘frequently asked questions’ Make sure you look at this in advance and query anything you’re not sure of. If this is your first cruise you are likely to be somewhat flummoxed by the varied expectations, and if this is not your first cruise, you may be unsure as to the expectations since it will have varied so much in the past. The Reichstag has a large glass dome that was constructed on top of it that you can enter. It affords you a stunning view of the city.

Museum Island is a complex of five museums and the Egyptian Museum contains many artifacts, dating as far back as 6,000 years. Art galleries in the city house the sculptures and paintings of famous artists such as Van Gogh, Picasso and Cezanne. There are many other architecturally beautiful buildings and places of fascinating historical interest throughout the city. You can view some surviving medieval buildings, as well as ultra-modern glass and steel buildings. You are able to purchase a 3-day ‘welcome card’ at tourist offices, ticket offices and some hotels. Berlin is full of holiday accommodation options. There are many hotels in the city and it is possible to find fairly cheap prices, even if you are looking at the five star category of hotel. Most of the better hotels can be found in the Western part of Berlin the section that was once East Berlin does not have the same standard of hotels or of other tourist facilities. If you are a member, you can stay at a youth hostel or if you not a member, you can stay at a regular hostel. These are among the cheapest accommodation options in the city.
